Review Summary & Ratings

4.5

In short – CyberGhost is the VPN that is worth investing in. It offers a powerful blend of performance, agility, value-add and user-friendliness. It's a solid choice if you are a VPN newbie.

My Experience with CyberGhost

To be very honest, I was not very fond of CyberGhost at first. However, this is the round of my evaluation of this provider and I have to say that the improvements seen are quite remarkable.

By any account, CyberGhost's growth from 0 to 6,000+ servers in 10 years is a staggering number. As a comparison, most run-of-the-mill VPN service providers will host anywhere from 100-500 servers, with a handful at the top offering a few thousand.

Let’s take a deeper dive into CyberGhost service quality, I've signed up on CyberGhost, spoke to their support, and ran a series of speed tests. You can learn more about my experience in my full CyberGhost review below.

CyberGhost Pros: What I Like about CyberGhost

1. Romania is Outside the 14-Eyes Jurisdiction

Jurisdiction is one of the most important things in a VPN service provider. Normally, we concern ourselves about where the company is based. Each country has its own laws and companies in those countries are subject to those laws.

To give you an idea of why this is important, let’s consider one of the most prominent countries in the world – the United States of America. While supposedly a beacon of democracy and freedom, the USA has several federal agencies which can do as they please, laws or not – within the country.

Thankfully, not all countries are the same. Each has their own laws though, so you do need to be aware of where your VPN service provider is from. This is especially so in the case of VPNs based in countries that share intelligence information, such as the 5-Eyes, 9-Eyes, and 14-Eyes alliances. Thankfully, CyberGhost is from Romania. While still a part of Europe, it isn’t part of those intelligence communities.

2. CyberGhost Offers a Secure Service

CyberGhost only offers 256-bit encryption for your data. This standard is the most secure level of encryption available today and is even used by many military systems. The higher the encryption rate, the more difficult it is for hackers to get to the information that is secured.

Along with this, they also use secure communication tunnels with options to choose from PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, or OpenVPN protocols. Do be aware though, that your choice of protocols can affect various things. This includes security, speed, and line stability.

While the communication protocol and encryption form the backbone of your connection, CyberGhost also offers other features such as;

No-logging Policy

No-logging policy

Logs contain information that is kept when you connect to many servers. The data can be used to track user activities such as the sites you visit and when. With a no-logging policy, CyberGhost ensures your anonymity.

Kill Switch

When enabled, the CyberGhost app kill switch monitors your Internet line status. If there is any loss of connection at all, the kill switch kicks in and immediately stops all data from transmitting to and from your device. This helps to prevent data from leaking outside the CyberGhost secure tunnel.

Ad-blocker

Since many ads today run with tracking codes, CyberGhost has included an ad blocker in all of its apps. This helps protect you not just from those codes, but also other Malware.

Cookie Cleaner

Outside the CyberGhost app, you can use their cookie cleaner on the Chrome browser. This utility helps you gain greater control over your browser settings and keeps you safer.

3. Fast Speeds in Many Major Locations

With a network of over 6,500 servers, you can expect CyberGhost to offer some pretty strong speeds. More servers means a higher coverage area and less congestion on each location.

To give you an idea of the speeds you can expect on CyberGhost, I’ve run a series of tests to various locations.

CyberGhost US Server Speed Test

As you can see, for major strategic locations, connection speeds on CyberGhost should remain high. You can expect this to be true across the board, with speeds dropping only for some less popular locations.

4. CyberGhost is Very Versatile

Aside from offering such a widespread of server locations, CyberGhost also caters to users on multiple platforms. This means that they have apps able to run on mainstream devices offering Windows, Linux, MacOS, Android, and iOS.

In fact, there are a whole lot more devices that can work with CyberGhost including Smart TVs, consoles, and routers. The last item (routers) is a bit iffy since routers are typically underpowered. Speeds on routers with CyberGhost may be very limited.

With support for so many platforms, you should also note that CyberGhost allows connections from up to 7 devices on each plan. That should be enough to cover most households (unless you’re like me and geeky to the extreme).

5. Excellent Support

Over the past few months I’ve noted a distinct shift in the attitude of support teams for many VPN service providers. This is especially true among top brands like CyberGhost. Response times have decreased by a lot, and given the higher number of customers likely during this period, I can only assume that it is due to increased resources.

Trying to get in touch with CyberGhost’s support team via live chat took me under a minute, and support staff was effective. I threw them a few basic questions on configuration and was pleased to note that they were quite knowledgeable in both general issues as well as specific ones regarding their own range of apps.

6. Great Marketing Content

Normally I detest marketing departments since to me they represent everything that is wrong about most businesses today. CyberGhost however changes my mindset on this. Their entire marketing team, from branding to outreach has done an excellent job.

It seems as though they’ve found the exact right balance of professionalism versus fun in their delivery. For those who sign up on their site, you will note that all communications with them come with just the right mix of information and playfulness. This is really rare in a company today, with most leaning one way or another.

7. Fantastic Prices for Long Commitments

For those willing to sign up for their three-year plan, CyberGhost drops its price to a mind-boggling $2.29/mo with another 3 months for FREE. For a service that’s offering the features and performance that CyberGhost is, this deal is hard to beat.

Of course, that’s a long term commitment, so if you plan to jump on it, make sure you are aware that CyberGhost also offers a 45-day money-back guarantee in case you change your mind.

CyberGhost Cons: What's Not-that-great about CyberGhost

1. No specialized pre-installed Routers

Although this is a bit far off since not many brands do it, CyberGhost could have partnered with some third-parties to install their service as a default on routers for sale. The installation of VPNs on routers can be complex and having it pre-configured for you can be a game changer.

To tell the truth though, this is kind of nit picking, but that’s what CyberGhost gets for running such a great service.

2. Some Servers are Slow

This point is something that is true for many service providers, but just needs to be stated here again. Sometimes, VPNs spread out servers to help users reduce latency. However, not all of their servers may be equal and in some more remote areas, speeds might be lower for various reasons.

As an example of this, CyberGhost is one of a few that has servers in Vietnam. This location isn’t that great though:

Final Thoughts

As you can see through this CyberGhost review, it is indeed a VPN service that is worth investing in. It offers a very powerful blend of performance, agility, value-add, as well as most importantly, user-friendliness.

Being able to talk to its users closely seems to have been what has helped CyberGhost develop strongly over the most recent period of time. In the past year, it has improved its offering tremendously and I have no hesitation in recommending them.

As for price, where a VPN is concerned, three-years isn’t an excessively long contract and CyberGhost does offer a 45-day money-back guarantee. This should be enough for most of you to purchase in the peace of mind.
