A web host with strong uptime and good customer support is not enough.

Latency is an important factor that people often overlook when choosing a web host.

In this article, we will look into:

  1. What is latency
  2. What cause latency to vary
  3. Best web hosts for UK websites

Note: If you are not building sites solely for U.K. users, it’s better to check out Jerry’s list of recommended hosting here.

What is latency?

The time span of a server receiving and processing a user-made request is called the Latency.

Latency changes based on the location of website audience and the location of the web host.

To explain this, let’s take our website, WebHostingSecretRevealed.net, for example.

Bitcatcha Report of WHSR
Here’s the speed report generated at Bitcatcha –

From this screen shot, we can see that:

  1. This site, WebHostingSecretRevealed.net (WHSR) is hosted on InMotion Hosting.
  2. The server response time differed from location to location.

The milliseconds recorded in the report are the amount of time the server took to receive and process a user request. This is the latency.

What cause the latency to vary?

Quick answer: Location. Latency depends on how far the user is from the server. The closer someone is to a data center, the better the latency is.

In our example – InMotion Hosting has two data centers (dwelling many servers) in total and both are located in the US. One is in the east and another is in the west of United States.

WHSR is stored in the data center located at the West Coast.

Here is what we can read from our Bitcatcha report (in simplified terms):

When a user request was sent from the west part of US, the latency was good (8 ms). Because the data center, where the site is stored, was very close to it.

But when the user request was sent from Japan, the latency was poor (367 ms) for the location being far from the data center.

Local, or offshore: Where should you host your websites?

Therefore,

  • Hosting your websites locally (aka storing your website on a server located inside your country) means good latency in your country.
  • Hosting your websites on a server located outside your country means comparatively poor latency in your country.

Latency is a certain part of your total website loading time. By improving the latency (say, choosing to host locally), your loading time will improve for your country audience.

Here are some points to keep in mind:

  • Hosting locally is better when majority of your audience is locals. This means you shouldn’t host your websites at United States if you have large audience base in United Kingdom.
  • Latency is one out of many important factors that affect your choice of hosting companies.
